Laying floorboards directly over tiles can be done, but it will create hollow areas underneath the floorboards. this will drastically increase the noise of your new floor (hollow areas can also encourage moisture and mould to develop between the tiles and floorboards). underlay, underlay underlay.... Yes, you can lay a wood floor over tile if the existing floor is in good shape and without cracks. i would suggest 3/8” thick, prefinished engineered hardwood flooring or easy to install laminate flooring. some brands can be installed as a floating floor that locks together and is not attached to. Most flooring experts recommend laying a subfloor over the floorboards before laying the floor tiles. in the past, the drawback to this method was that you needed to lay sheets of thick marine grade plywood..
Using plywood sheeting between the new floorboards and the existing tiles is a great method of ensuring the flooring will be level. the sheeting is placed over the tiles and then the floorboards are glued or nailed to the sheeting.. I noticed our present flooring is ceramic tile over a concrete flooring, which is over a slated subfloor. i want to tile 12x 12 ceramic tiles over the existing ceramic mesh tile, however we have two vacant areas on the floor that expose the wood subflooring (two vanities were in those places).. The traditional solution for vinyl tiles/sheet is to cover the floor with 3mm hardboard, stapled or pinned down, to give a flat surface. you can get some very nice, very thick vinyl sheet these days..
