I took a boat from captain frank's in st. pete (877-2559-2646) to egmont key several years ago. no, it's not a car ferry as there are no roads on egmont key. we snorkeled, swam, shelled, and walked around the island while there. it was a lot of fun.. We took our boat out from our slip at marinemax st petersburg and made a quick stop at egmont key island and state park. although it's only a few miles out of the tampa bay, this island seems as. We also often spot sea birds on the ride to and from egmont key island aboard the tampa bay ferry or our big green boat. once on the island, egmont key offers great shelling, swimming, and exploring opportunities. there is even a large fort on the island named fort dade..
Re: can my boat make it safely and comfortably to egmont key? i live in st pete and have been boating along time in this area. my 1st boat was similar to yours (18' searay bowrider) and i went to egmont a fair amount early on. the key is the weather, what you have to watch is the weather changing.. Fort dade began construction in 1898, near the onset of the spanish/american war. by 1910, egmont key was home to around 300 people and more than 70 buildings, including a local hospital and elementary school for the soldiers children.. Hi donna, yes, you should have no problem making the trip to shell key from the ft. desoto camp grounds. you just need to be careful when you cross the bunces pass channel (if there happens to be lot of boat traffic at the time)..
